My boss, Ce (who is a superb chef), traditionally makes a dinner for artists and staff at work towards the end of each residency. It’s always a grand to-do with amazing food and she spends a full day dancing to Motown classics and carefully crafting each dish. This year scheduling a dinner when everyone was available was impossible, so she decided to put together a Sunday brunch.
On the menu:
Baby asparagus with lemon caper sauce with deviled eggs dusted with red caviar, Shrimp and Grits with fried okra (not for those of us with allergies - she made me a special omelet with bacon, basil, goat cheese and heirloom tomatoes with sweet white onion sauteed in cognac) and cinnamon vanilla waffles with fresh fruit and fresh whipped cream
Yum-o.
There was one small problem with the smoke that okra makes when you fry it:

Near gravity.

Thursday Lindsey and I went with Sarah to see her husband Jeff’s band, Near Gravity. It was the first time I’ve been to Double Door Inn and they were wonderful.
It was a battle of the bands with 3 other groups and Near Gravity was definitely the best.

I’m using OS X 10.5 (Leopard) at work now. And Adobe CS3 at home. And they’re both wonderful.

One for my designer friends.
I had this note on a proof that was returned to me at work today: “Text needs to be bigger with the front. Tahoma? Or Helvetica? And change the green.”
Tahoma. Ta-friggin’-homa. For the record, the font was mCentury Expanded and was kearned and tracked perfectly.

Via BBC News: “Monkes kill Delhi deputy mayor“.
If you don’t follow the link, then you suck. Here’s my favorite part “One approach (to curb India’s out-of-control monkey problem) has been to train bands of larger, more ferocious langur monkeys to go after the smaller groups of Rhesus macaques”. Way to think outside the box.

Identity theft in progress.

This letter from Administaff (the company that handles our HR at the office) was in my mailbox when I got home from work:
Dear David Hill,
On October 3, 2007, an Administaff laptop computer containing personal information about certain current and former Administaff worksite employees was reported missing. We are writing to notify you that the information stored on the laptop includes your name, address and Social Security number.
We sincerely regret this incident. We take the protection of personal information extremely seriously. As of the date of this letter, our investigation strongly indicates that this was a random event and that the personal information was not specifically targeted…The laptop computer is password protected; however, the personal information was not saved in an encrypted location, which is a clear violation of company policies. Blah, blah, identity theft, blah, blah, free credit report, blah, blah.
Great.

For those Mac users among us: I’ve ordered Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) for my office. Since the powers that be let me pre-order, it will arrive Friday of next week, which means I will install it promptly on the 26th (on my computer at least…probably not the rest of the lab until I have a chance to test it). I’m giddy with excitement. Giddy, I tell you.
If you’ve lived under a rock for awhile, or (God-forbit) use a PC, here’s a bit more information about Leopard.
Now if I could just get my copy of CS3, I’d be the coolest kid on the block.

An orphan lemur has been taken back by its mother. No further explanation needed. The story just made me happy.

Sleep = wasted time.

Can’t sleep. Clowns will eat me.
I had a bad dream that woke me up, and now I can’t fall asleep again. Stupid dreams. Did you know that when you dream, it happens all at once? Even-though it feels like they stretch on forever they are physiologically created in one synapse fire and are over almost the same instant that they start. Neat, huh?!
As a designer-y side note, I don’t like reading the Economist, but I like this ad:

Scott Matthew.

I just got in from the gym (aside: if you read the post immediately preceding this one you’ll know that, technically, I went twice today) and hit started iTunes playing in the usual shuffled-up fashion. I stumbled across a few songs by Scott Matthew in my library that tagged along when I bought the Shortbus soundtrack specifically for one or two other songs. It’s a little like Christmas when you discover you have music that you like and you didn’t know it.
The long-and-short of this post: listen to Scott Matthew if you haven’t. Especially “Language“.
