Appraisal

18 days and 17 hours until I close on my new condo, and I find out today that it didn’t appraise for the amount it needed to. This puts my financing in jeopardy, which could invalidate my contract which stands the chance of making me cry.

I’d hate to lose another condo because of something like this.

CROSS YOUR FINGERS. DO IT RIGHT NOW!

Quit.

As a smoker, I hate to post this. But it’s too brilliant an anti-smoking campaign to be ignored. That would be an x-ray of someone’s lungs placed inside a cigarette butt receptacle.

My list.

Lindsey chastised me pretty thoroughly when I told her I made a list of what I liked about myself, but I think she’s wrong. I think we should all have lists like this (note, I’m omitted most of the stuff I don’t like about myself…that simply isn’t any of your business):

I think I’m a nice guy. As I see it, I’m a pretty decent person: I recycle, take care of my dog and try to treat everyone equally. I can drive a stick shift and know my way around a kitchen. I remember enough French to get myself in trouble. I’m not perfect - I don’t always fold the laundry the minute the wash is finished - but I have excellent penmanship. My bed is rarely made, but my apartment is well furnished with things that I enjoy, and soon my first home will be furnished with the same things. If I’ve ever been accused of being a bad friend I can say with certainty that it wasn’t on purpose.

I feel better already! I’d love to see other people’s lists posted in the comments here. Trust me - it’s cathartic!

The day had to come. My noble experiment in non-TV living, much like Communism and Crystal Pepsi, was doomed to fail. I’ve been making do for about a year with a 18″ flat-screen TV in my bedroom and none in the living room. Which means I haven’t used my living room in months.

What I didn’t account for was that when people come to visit, they often expect to watch the ‘tube. It’s a sad fact that conversation is mostly dead (or at least on its last leg) and it’s great to be able to watch a movie with your friends without having to reenact it via charades or piling everyone into the bed.

So here’s what I’ve done:

Bravia Box

It’s a grown-up, full sized 26″ Sony Bravia High-def LCD TV with HDMI inputs (and some other fancy stuff that I don’t remember. My research tells me that Sony Bravia’s are some of the best on the market, and I hope that my non-trained eye can verify this fact.

I had it shipped to my office, and nearly had to fight a death-match with John - who signed for it - he was trying to steal it! But I threw him over the 3rd floor balcony. I win! Let’s hope it fits in the built-in bookcase in the new condo!

Work. Ugh.

I have spend the entire afternoon doing the mindless paperwork that I have put off for over 2 weeks and it is KILLING me. I’m so bored!

Mother.

Mother Candles help your nose remember Mom the way she really was.

The hardest thing about buying a property is not the massive amounts of paperwork and contracts that you have to read. It’s the waiting. I’m waiting to receive a faxed contract so that I can sign it so that I can send it to my mortgage broker who is waiting to start the loan process so that we can assign an appraiser. The funny thing is that I can’t get an appraisal until the mortgage is started and I don’t know if the property will qualify for my mortgage until it is appraised. It’s a horrible game and I’m not enjoying it.

It’s not easy when everyone on the planet works on a different time-table than you do.

I have done a very big thing. Very, very big. I made an offer on a condo, went back and forth a few times on price and accepted the seller’s final counter-offer. If God is willing (and the creek doesn’t rise) I’m going to be a homeowner.

But it wasn’t as easy as looking around a little, picking one, walking through and calling the movers. It’s been a complicated process with loads of education along the way. Buying property is complex, and so I plan to start a new series here called “Putting Down Roots - Buying My First Home” that will document and record my experience.

Stay tuned for the entire story.
