Stabbings.

Four people were stabbed in five robberies across Charlotte today. After what happened Wednesday night, that’s pretty damn scary.

Sharp.

For those of you who haven’t already heard the story, I was accosted at knife-point last night in the parking lot at my office.

I was working with a difficult deadline and went back to the office after I left the night-job at Apple around 11. I left around 1:20 am and, as I was walking towards my car a man came out of a structure on the corner of our property in what should have been a lot secured by large gates. He walked towards me really fast with a knife in his hand and was shouting that I needed to “give him my fuckin’ money.” Instead of giving him my fuckin’ money I got into my car and locked the door fast, but he had moved across 25 feet or so of parking lot in the time it took me to travel 10, so he was only 4 or 5 feet from me by the time I locked the door and started the car. I got out of the parking lot as fast as I could, nearly taking down the back gate (as it opens slower than frozen molasses running uphill) and called the police as I flew down Church Street into Uptown.

There was a memo at work today about safety on the property, and we’re going to look at lights in the lot and we’re going to start locking all the gates on the property which we haven’t done in quite awhile. But it’s still pretty scary. I was parked in a lot that isn’t really for parking - ordinarily the staff parks in an open lot on the corner of 10th and Church, on the other side of the block from the building. I don’t like the idea of what could have happened if I had been parked there. Or the idea of artists walking from the condos we own across Church Street through that parking lot at all hours.

We live in a city, and bad things can happen. Be aware of your surroundings.
